“…resolution for some critical pairs such as Phen/Ant and IcdP/DahA, although poor resolution of the benzofluoranthene isomers is reported [4]. The latter is overcome by the use of a more polar stationary phase such as 50% phenyl methyl polysiloxane (i. e. DB-17MS type columns) [9,10]. Liquid-crystalline columns have also been reported to provide satisfactory separation of critical pairs that coelute on DB-5 type capillary columns such as Chr and triphenylene, the benzofluoranthene isomers and dibenz[a,c]anthracene (DacA) and DahA [4,11].…”

“…This stationary phase provides good separation of certain pairs (i. e. phenanthrene and anthracene), although critical coelutions such as that involving the benzofluoranthene isomers might be more challenging. Medium polar stationary phases such as 50% phenyl polysiloxane columns have been reported to provide satisfactory resolution of several critical pairs, including the benzofluoranthene and the dibenzoanthracene isomers, pointing to this stationary phase as a good choice for PAHs separation [4,9,10]. Liquid crystalline stationary phases have been also described to be well suited for the separation of PAHs isomers [4,11,12].…”

“…In characterizing samples with higher masses and more limited volatilities, however, liquid-phase separations such as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) tend to be more useful. Both normal and reverse phase HPLC of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compounds (PAH) are well understood, particularly in relation to the influence of solute shape and configuration on retention times. However, HPLC analyses are limited by the lack of solvents able to elute large PAH molecules with molecular masses much above 500 u from a bonded silica-particle column. , The limited availability of well-defined standard compounds over a wide range of masses has also tended to restrict the amount of information that can be obtained from HPLC studies above the 500 u level.…”
