Standardized Extensions of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC)

Abstract: This paper describes extensions to the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard that are active areas of current development in the relevant international standardization committees. While the first version of HEVC is sufficient to cover a wide range of applications, needs for enhancing the standard in several ways have been identified, including work on range extensions for color format and bit depth enhancement, embedded-bitstream scalability, and 3D video. The standardization of extensions in each of th… Show more

“…For example, where 4:2:0 chroma subsampling is acceptable for natural images, screen content gets deformed noticeably by such color downscaling. Additionally, compression tools [40] have been developed for such content, so even more options become available for the codec developer.…”

“…It operates in the compressed domain and generates a single H.265/HEVC [26] bitstream (or H.265/SHVC [25] or H.265/MV-HEVC [25]) that can be fed into a single hardware decoder. The novel method processes the video bitstreams of the different tiles in the compressed domain, by performing a simple manipulation of some information in the header.…”

“…There are several new intra coding tools that are under consideration for the Screen Content Coding extension of HEVC [7]. Screen content, such as maps, text and graphics, have different characteristics from camera-captured images with patterns that tend to be clean and repetitive in texture.…”
