Standing crops of dominant combretum species at three browsing levels in the Kruger National Park

Abstract: In red bushwillow veld near the Sand River in the Kruger National Park, Republic of South Africa, a determination was made of the standing crops of Combretum apiculatum and C. zeyheri at browsing levels delineated by the maximum feeding heights of impala (1,5 m), kudu (2,5 m) and giraffe (5,5 m). Using harvested sample trees, logarithmic or linear regression equations were generated which related basal diameter or stem height to biomass or percentage of total biomass at the different levels. Biomass was divide… Show more

“…The median values of standing crop for the different land-use types are nature conservation 20,4 t/ha, commercial cattle farming 17,5 t/ha, communal lands 4,8 t/ha. Griffin et al (1992), 2 Shackleton (unpublished data), 3 Dayton (1978). 4 Rutherford (1979).…”

“…All woody plants (>0.5 m in height) rooted within the transect were identified to species and categorized as either trees (>=3 m in height, shrubs (<3 m), coppice (trees resprouting from the base after elephants have pushed them over), or dead. Trees with no available browse (no foliage below 5.5 m, the maximum browsing height of giraffe [Dayton 1978]) were also recorded. Trees and shrubs were respectively each assigned to one of four easily distinguishable size classes.…”

“…The average was recorded CD and formed the basis for canopy area (CA) calculations (CA = p/4 CD 2 ). The BD was measured just above the basal swell at roughly ankle height, because most woody vegetation grows in multistemmed forms at all sites (Dayton, 1978). For multistemmed individuals, the total basal area (BA) was calculated as the sum of the basal areas of all stems:…”
