Staphylococcus lugdunensis bacteraemia secondary to an infected intracardiac fragment of a vascular access device

Abstract: We report a case of Staphylococcus lugdunensis bacteraemia following infection of a fragmented totally implantable vascular access device. This report highlights the virulence of S. lugdunensis especially in immunosuppressed patients with prosthetic devices as well as the importance of distinguishing between contamination and blood stream infection when this organism is cultured from blood.
