Stark broadening of 3s3P0–3p3D and 3p3D–3d3F0transitions along carbon isoelectronic sequences of ions revisited

Abstract: The Stark widths of N II and O III spectral lines belonging to 3s 3P0–3p 3D and 3p 3D–3d 3F0 multiplets have been calculated and measured in a capillary discharge plasma. The calculations are extended to the same multiplets of F IV and Ne V ions. The plasma electron density in the capillary discharge is determined from the width of the He II Pβ line, while the electron temperature is measured from the relative intensities of N II lines. A comparison of the experimental and theoretical data shows good mutual ag… Show more

“…Using this equation one can calculate the Stark width of a particular spectral line for different electron densities and temperatures. In order to get FWHM in the wavelength units (nm), the electron density has to be taken in m À3 and electron temperature in K. The studied regularities of the Stark width of spectral lines, which originate from the 3s-3p transition data published so far ( Konjević et al 1984( Konjević et al , 2002Konjević & Wiese 1990;Purić & Š ćepanović 1999;Š ćepanović & Purić 2003;Ivković et al 2005;Dimitrijević & Sahal-Brechot 1994, 1998a, 1998b, 1998c, 1998d, 1998e, 1999, 2000Ralchenko et al 2003;Milosavljevic et al 2001;Elabidi et al 2005;Simic et al 2005;Srećković et al 2001;Ben Nessib et al 2004), enabled these predictions with the average accuracy of the data used in establishing Stark width dependence on the upper level ionization potential and rest core charge of the emitter. This is in accordance with the conclusions drawn in reviews (see, e.g., Konjević et al 1984Konjević et al , 2002Konjević & Wiese 1990), where the experimental and theoretical data are critically evaluated.…”

“…The mentioned MSE Stark broadening data have been used for the investigation of regularities and systematic trends in isoelectronic sequences. Besides the already mentioned dependence on the ionization potential of the upper energy level of transition, MSE data were used for the investigation of the dependence on the emitter charge for the Stark broadening of lithium [52,54], boron [56], beryllium [57], and carbon [58] isoelectronic sequences.…”

“…The low-pressure capillary discharge is similar to that used to study the spectra of highly ionized xenon [18,19] and recently, in our laboratory, for the investigation of Stark broadening of N II and O III lines [20]. In this experiment, we use a quartz discharge tube, with a 3 mm inner diameter, and aluminium electrodes (with 3 mm diameter holes) located 200 mm apart.…”
