Static and dynamic bearing failure of carbon/epoxy composite joints

Abstract: Mechanical fastening is a common method used to join composite materials in aeronautical industry. Various studies have been performed dedicated to the behaviour of composite bolted joints under quasi-static loadings, but only few studies deal with the dynamic behaviour (crash or impacts). The aim of this work is to study the loading rate influence on the bearing response of a carbon/epoxy laminate loaded by a pin. For that purpose, a double shear test fixture has been specially designed to measure the global … Show more

“…It was also shown by Portemont et al. 29 that the matrix cracking and damage in the joint were rate-dependent. Therefore, as the strain rate was increased, the initiation of matrix cracks was delayed.…”

“…The fields of the apparent temperature variation are obtained by computing the difference of two temperature fields between a time 𝑡 and the time 𝑡 0 which corresponds to the beginning of the loading of the sample. This analysis methodology is classically used by various authors to focus on temperature variation due to the mechanical loading of the sample (Meola and Carlomagno 2009;Portemont et al 2018). At the beginning of the test, the abscissa within the intervals 𝑥 = [0; 60] and 𝑥 = [265; 320] refer to the tabs length.…”

“…There is a growing use of polymer composites as primary aerostructures, with recent aircraft such as Boeing Dreamliner and Airbus A350 having more than 50% of the vehicle weight as polymer composite [1], [2]. Other sectors, such as automotive, marine, and infrastructure are now widely adopting these materials.…”
