Static Polycrystalline Magnetic Susceptibility and Four-Probe Single-Crystal Conductivity Studies of [Ru(bpy)3]0

Abstract: Magnetic susceptibility measurements of polycrystalline samples of electrochemically grown [Ru(bpy)3]°s how a low-temperature sub-Curie law tail and a broad maximum at about 300 K. The data are consistent with an alternating linear-chain spin-Va Heisenberg antiferromagnetic system, with \J\/k = 238(3) K, the alternation parameter a = 0.40(3), and g = 2.20(4). The stronger coupling is probably intermolecular between ligand-localized electrons on adjacent molecules with significant * overlap. Four-probe single-c… Show more

“…59 Similar interpretations for the magnetic data of [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 0 have been proposed for extremely broad "sub-Curie" tail displayed by this compound. 60 More recently it has been reported that the spins of the two (bpy…”

“…[161,162] In these complexes the three bpy units are not covalently linked to each other; nevertheless they surround the positively charged metal center in a similar fashion to the tris(bpy) cryptand ligand. The series of compounds, [M(bpy) 3 ] 0 (M Fe, Ru, or Os) was successfully electrocrystallized at a platinum electrode from the corresponding precursor cations, [M(bpy) 3 ] 2 .…”

“…Only the reduced ruthenium complex has been thoroughly characterized at the present time. [162] Magnetic susceptibility measurements on electrochemically prepared single crystals revealed that [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 0 is best characterized by the spatially isolated redox orbital model. [162] The reduction electrons are located on two of the three bpy units of each molecule in the ligands p* orbitals.…”
