Statistical Inference for Coefficient Alpha

Abstract: Rigorous comparison of the reliability coefficients of several tests or measurement procedures requires a sampling theory for the coefficients. This paper summarizes the important aspects of the sampling theory for Cronbach's (1951) coefficient alpha, a widely used internal consistency coefficient. This theory enables researchers to test a specific numerical hypothesis about the population alpha and to obtain confidence intervals for the population coefficient. It also permits researchers to test the hypothesi… Show more

“…Procedures for making inferences (e.g. the exact confidence intervals) on the Cronbach's alpha can be found in Feldt et al (1987). Tables 1a and 1b Cronbach's alpha for the three HDI components lie between 0.86 and 0.93, i.e.…”

“…We used the .80 as the cut-off for acceptable reliability, as recommended by Nunnally and Bernstein (1994) for scale scores intended for use in clinical settings. Differences in internal consistency between groups were evaluated via Ftests for Cronbach's alphas from independent samples (Feldt, 1969;Feldt, Woodruff, & Salih, 1987), adjusting the p-value criterion to < .003 (.05/17) to control for Type-1 error rates.…”
