Statistical profiles of malignant melanoma and other skin cancers in Japan: 2007 update

Abstract: In Japan, the number of patients with malignant skin tumors has increased year by year. The prognosis of patients with advanced malignant melanoma remains extremely poor, but that of patients in stage III has shown an improvement.

“…Therefore expression of wild type allele type (Isoleucine) has been shown to be protective against tumor progression. Although previous study indicated that polymorphism at the GSTP1 locus would be an important factor in susceptibility to bladder and testicular cancer [4] Although the reason for the discrepancy between the result of our study and that of the studies in Caucasian population remains unknown, we could hypothesize that the genetic factors involved in melanomagenesis vary among races and also skin types [16,17]. Curtin et al also reported that genetic backgrounds which correlate with the mechanisms of melanomagenesis are different between ALM melanoma and the other types of MM such as LMM and SSM [18].…”

“…Melanoma has initially been diagnosed in approximately 1500 patients per year and its rate is increasing. A study by the Prognosis and Statistical Investigation Committee (PSIC) of the Japanese Skin Cancer Society (JSCS) showed that the numbers of patients with malignant melanoma in 22 hospitals over several years were 1717 (1987 -1991), 1991 (1992 -1996), and 2468 (1997 -2001) 5 . Trends in anatomical site and Clark's subtype in Japan are shown in Tables 1 and 2 6 .…”

“…The incidence rates range between 20 and 40 per 100,000 people in Australia and United States each year [1,2]. In contrast, the incidence in Asians is clearly lower, approximately one per 100,000 [3,4]. However, the most common clinical subtype of melanoma in Asians is acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM), which occurs at a rate of approximately 40%-65% of all cutaneous melanomas [4,5] compared with only 2%-3% in Caucasians [6].…”
