Laut Tawar Lake is located in Aceh Tengah District is the largest lake in Aceh Province. The lake, located at an altitude of 1230 meters above sea level, produces about 13 species of freshwater fish. Fish depik (Rasbora tawarensis), eyas (Rasbora sp.), and relo (Rasbora sp.) are endemic species of Laut Tawar Lake. This study aims to estimate the potential of fish production based on the value of morphoedaphic index. The observation was conducted for one year, from October 2016 until September 2017. The measurement of electric conductivity value of lake waters was conducted on 7 (seven) stations selected purposively in the lake area about 5870 hectares. The results showed that morphoedaphic index value of Laut Tawar Lake ranged from 5.10 to 7.84 with an average of 6.14. Potential of fish production in the lake is 33.47 kg/ha/yr with total potential of fish production of 196.49 ton/yr. The value shows a decrease of 10.93 kg/ha/yr over a period of 22 years. This decrease is caused by changes in morphometry parameters and water quality of Laut Tawar Lake.

The paper aims to provide sustainable use and conservation insight into tropical aquatic resources with a special emphasis on inland water ecosystems in Indonesia, such as lakes and rivers. The talks focuses on certain use of resources in these ecosystems by humans. The inland water ecosystem should be properly managed to protect and maintain its biodiversity and sustainability through wise use of the aquatic resources with several ecological approaches. The richness in inland water resources does not lead Indonesia to freedom from water crises, and social and environmental problems. Degraded inland water ecosystem with much reduced carrying capacities, trapping people in conflicts of ecosystem use. The challenge of simplifying the adoption of conservation and sustainable use approaches to promote the implementation of practices in Indonesia remains.

Peatlands are inland water ecosystems that are very unique and vulnerable to environmental disturbances including forest fires. In fact, the peat ecosystem has a very diverse of fish species and has the potential for consumption and ornamental fish. One of the countries that has extensive peatlands is Indonesia. Various types of ornamental fish potentially found in peatlands, as well as various species of economic importance for food. Therefore, it is very necessary to conserve and utilize biodiversity of peatlands for the purpose of optimally utilizing sustainable development. The scope of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive view of fish diversity in Indonesian peatlands from the aspect of use, threats, and conservation strategies.
