Status of the ESS cryogenic system

Abstract: Abstract. The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a neutron science facility funded by a collaboration of 17 European countries currently under design and construction in Lund, Sweden. The centerpiece of ESS is a 2.5 GeV proton linac utilizing superconducting RF cavities operating at 2 K. In addition to cooling the SRF cavities, cryogenics is also used at ESS in the liquid hydrogen moderators surrounding the target. ESS also uses both liquid helium and liquid nitrogen in a number of the planned neutron instrum… Show more

“…The ACCP is the largest and most complicated of the ESS cryoplants. The cooling requirements and the initial concept design have been developed and improved over the years [107][108][109][110][111].Architecture.The ACCP consists of a warm compressor, oil handling and gas management station, located in the ACCP compressor building, and one single coldbox, located in the cold box building. The simplified block diagram in figure 60 shows the main components of the ACCP, consisting of:…”

“…The ACCP is the largest and most complicated of the ESS cryoplants. The cooling requirements and the initial concept design have been developed and improved over the years [4][5][6][7][8][9]. The ACCP was procured in an open bid procedure, which covers the design, the warm compressor station and the cold box, the plant control system, installation and commissioning.…”
