Status Quo in Pediatric and Neonatal Simulation in Four Central European Regions: The DACHS Survey

Abstract: Although delivered heterogeneously, widespread use of pediatric simulation and a considerable number of already existing SBT programs are the key findings of this survey. These data are encouraging enough to promote more effective networking in simulation-based research, education, training, and quality improvement, as we aim to ultimately increase patient safety for neonates, infants, and children.

“…Two thirds of respondents did not participate in any kind of simulation activity during the previous academic year, and the majority of programmes did not implement neonatal and paediatric emergency training with SBMT. These data contrast with the current situation in other developed countries, such as the U.S., Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and South Tyrol, where SBMT has been implemented into educational curricula [14] and offered by the majority of paediatric residency programmes, even though great differences between various countries in terms of SBMT’s accreditation, frequency and timing are still reported [911, 13, 15].…”

“…Although most participants in the Anglo-American/Anglo-Saxon region (79.3%) and in India (82.6%) initiated educational activities for the care of COVID-19 patients, this was only true for 47.1% of European respondents. This could reflect heterogeneity in HCP willingness to adopt and promote such training modalities and/or a potential lack of support from institutions or superiors across these regions ( 8 10 ). In situ simulation was the most prevalent training mode for COVID-19 simulations.…”

“…Kritisch sei hier angemerkt, dass, obwohl Teamtraining als sinnvoll eingeschätzt wird, vor allem im deutschsprachigen Raum kein formalisierter Prozess zur Trainerausbildung, Durchführung von Trainings oder deren Evaluation besteht und die entsprechenden Ressourcen für ein adäquates Teamtraining im Rahmen der Krankenhausfinanzierung auch nicht vorgesehen sind [32].…”
