STEAM in environment and science education: Analysis and bibliometric mapping of the research literature (2013-2020)

Abstract: The suitability of the science-arts convergence is currently being actively discussed because it is important in educating students to become more creative and knowledgeable people. This type of research is a quantitative study using a bibliometric approach. This study aimed to carry out systematic mapping of research trends in the STEAM field in science education. We analyzed 30 articles from 25 leading journals from 1 January 2013 to 31 August 2020 (8 years period), the metadata obtained from the Scopus data… Show more

“…Apart from that, the keywords such as "augmented reality," "learning systems," "computational thinking," and "online learning" might imply that there is a general idea that through STEAM and TPCK, new approaches in education can be promoted, as previously suggested (Mishra & Koehler, 2006;Quigley & Herro, 2016). Finally, the findings show that the same countries and contexts that examine STEAM or TPACK individually, such as English-speaking countries along with Spain, Turkey, and Asian countries, are generally the ones that move further to examine how they can be interwoven (Aguilera & Ortiz-Revilla, 2021;Irwanto, 2021;Lee et al, 2022;Porras et al, 2022;Putri et al, 2022;Santi et al, 2021;Suprapto et al, 2021).…”

“…STEAM has also been linked to education innovations, skills, teacher training, education technologies, and science teaching, as well as education in other composing areas, such as mathematics and arts. The countries that disseminated most of the relevant articles were also mainly English-speaking or Asian, along with Spain or Turkey (Aguilera & Ortiz-Revilla, 2021;López-Belmonte et al, 2021;Marín-Marín et al, 2021;Porras et al, 2022;Santi et al, 2021). There are, therefore, some common points between the two terms and some common findings of bibliometric studies around them (Aguilera & Ortiz-Revilla, 2021;Irwanto, 2021;Lee et al, 2022;Porras et al, 2022;Putri et al, 2022).…”

“…Bibliometric analysis has gained popularity in science education research in recent years: The scientific output on topics such as physics problem solving [22], STEAM education [23], digital literacy in higher education [24], scientific literacy [25], the role of virtual reality in computer science education [21] or the linking behaviour in the physics education research co-authorship network [26] were-among others-analysed bibliometrically. That is the case because bibliometric analysis is helpful for (a) uncovering and mapping cumulative scientific research foci and (b) producing a thorough overview of scientific output and its development over time in the research area under investigation [27].…”

“…Fatimah's (2017) research proves that applying the STEAM approach to learning using PjBL can develop 21stcentury skills, namely critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation, communication and collaboration, information literacy, media literacy, technological literacy, flexibility, and adaptability. The advantages of STEAM integrated PjBL is also stated by Santi (2020) that the PjBL model can be used to improve 21st Century skills (4C: Critical thinking, Collaboration, Creative, Communication) by being integrated with the STEAM approach. According to Reza (2017), the STEAM approach using PjBL can develop students' soft skills: collaboration, empathy, communication, critical thinking, environmental care, hard work, adaptability, responsibility, creative thought, leadership, and curiosity, and honesty.…”
