Stem Cell Therapy Improves the Outcome of Liver Resection in Cirrhotics

Abstract: In conclusion, autologous stem cell therapy can improve the surgical outcome in cirrhotic livers and should be considered as an adjuvant treatment in such patients undergoing hepatic resection.

“…Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is the therapy used as a last resort following the failure of medical management (18,19). Apart from OLT, stem cell transplantation, with the characteristics of simplicity, flexibility and fewer side-effects on the patients, has become another effective means of treating liver failure in recent years (2022).…”

“…Infusion of unsorted autologous bone marrow stem cells through the portal vein and hepatic artery in patients with cirrhosis, showed an improvement in ChildPugh score and albumin levels [16,37]. A significant increase of liver function in cirrhotic and hepatocellular carcinoma patients was observed following autologous bone marrow stem cell transplantation prior to surgery [38]. However, use of unsorted bone marrow stem cells or MSCs must be treated with caution as these cells can also differentiate into myofibroblasts which are the scar forming cells of the liver [39].…”

“…In these cases, intraportal administration of autologous CD133(+) bone marrow-derived stem cells after portal venous embolization of several liver segments has been shown to increase proliferation rates and FLR volume [125,126]. Similarly, stem cell therapy prior to surgical liver resection may result in significant improvement in liver function parameters, as well as a decrease in post-operative complications [127]. Potentially, cell therapy could be used to replace or repair liver tissue damaged not only by surgery, but also by radiation or chemotherapy.…”
