“…The biological responses of in-vitro preparations of the thyroid gland have received extensive investigation, and in particular, the effect of thyrotrophin (TSH) on the thyroidal adenylate cyclase-cyclic AMP system has been the subject of detailed studies in membrane (review: Marshall, 1976), slice (Van Sande & Dumont, 1973;Holmes, Dirmikis, Martin & Munro, 1978) and isolated cell preparations (Takasu, Charrier, Mauchamp & Lissitzky, 1977;Rapoport & Adams, 1978). Stimulation of cyclic AMP accumulation in thyroid slices in vitro has also been observed with thyroid-stimulating antibodies (TSAb) (Onaya, Kotani, Yamada & Ochi, 1973;McKenzie & Zakarija, 1976;Holmes et al 1978); these are thought to interact with the TSH receptor in human thyroid tissue, stimulate adenylate cyclase and thyroid hormone production, and be associated with the thyrotoxicosis of Graves's disease.…”
