“…Further studies are needed on the possible enzymic role of these bacteria in helping in the preand post-penetration phases of the fungus. It is also possible that the ' helper bacteria ' assist in a more direct way : they could promote the adhesion of the fungal spores to the leaf surface by providing a mechanical or chemical bridge ; increase the rate of germination (Mosse,1962 ;Ali & Jackson, 1989) ; or promote mycelial growth as MHBs did with the ectomycorrhizal fungus Laccaria laccata (Duponnois, 1992). Some species of Pseudomonas are known to produce siderophores which are important in the establishment of some fungal infections (Slade et al, 1986 ;Swinburne, 1986 ;Fernando et al, 1996) but Brown (1986) found this not to be the case in detached leaf pathogenicity tests with S. nodorum.…”
