Stir casting process for manufacture of Al–SiC composites

Abstract: Stir casting is an economical process for the fabrication of aluminum matrix composites. There are many parameters in this process, which affect the final microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites. In this study, micron-sized SiC particles were used as reinforcement to fabricate Al-3 wt% SiC composites at two casting temperatures (680 and 850 °C) and stirring periods (2 and 6 min). Factors of reaction at matrix/ ceramic interface, porosity, ceramic incorporation, and agglomeration of the parti… Show more

“…Several approaches have been used to promote the wettability of a liquid matrix alloy with reinforcement particles, decreasing the surface tension of liquid metal is one of them. Magnesium (Mg) acts like a surfactant element, which has been used widely as well as wetting agent to promote the wettability of different ceramic particles, such as SiC and mica [19,20]. The obtained mixed melt was discharged into the graphite permanent mould (size 100×65×10 mm 3 ), and then followed by air cooling for about 15 min.…”

“…It has played a significant role in various areas, such as the aerospace, automotive, electronic instrumentation, and other industry. But in order to get high performance composite materials, it need a suitable interface for composites [1][2][3]. Due to the load is transferred through the interface of the composites under the action of external force.…”
