Stochastic background of gravitational waves generated by pre-galactic black holes

Abstract: In this work, we consider the stochastic background of gravitational waves (SBGWs) produced by pre‐galactic stars, which form black holes in scenarios of structure formation. The calculation is performed in the framework of hierarchical structure formation using a Press–Schechter‐like formalism. Our model reproduces the observed star formation rate at redshifts z≲ 6.5. The signal predicted in this work is below the sensitivity of the first generation of detectors but could be detectable by the next generation … Show more

“…where m(t) is the mass of a star that has a lifetime of t. The mass of the remnant m r depends on the progenitor mass (Pereira & Miranda 2010). The stellar IMF Φ(m) follows the standard Salpeter (1955) form, Φ(m) = Am −2.35 , with a mass range of 0.1 M < M < 140 M .…”

“…To be self-contained, we give a summary of the most important ingredients of this model in this section. Following Pereira & Miranda (2010), the equation that governs the total gas density, which includes the baryon accretion rate, the formation of stars through the transfer of baryons and the gas ejection by stars, is determined in a self-consistent way.…”

“…Collapse of Population II and III stars, phase transitions in the early Universe, cosmic strings and a variety of binary stars are some examples of sources that could produce such a putative background of GWs (see e.g. de Araujo, Miranda & Aguiar , , ; Maggiore ; Regimbau & de Freitas Pacheco ; Miranda, de Araujo & Aguiar ; de Araujo & Miranda ; Sandick et al ; Suwa et al ; Giovannini ; Pereira & Miranda , among others).…”
