Stolidobranch ascidians from the tropical western Indian Ocean

Abstract: Coastal ascidians collected over two centuries from Suez to Mozambique have been successively deposited in the MNHN and are now described and figured. Some of them were already known from the Indian Ocean, others are common to the Pacific, and some others are new species. Even though the present taxonomic work notably increases our knowledge of the tropical eastern African coast, it comprises so many miscellaneous collections from such distant points that it can only begin to suggest the diversity of ascidians… Show more

“…KOTT (2002) states that the Atlantic populations are different from those in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, but she does not provide the characters that show that differentiation, nor does she suggest a new name. On the other hand, MONNIOT (2002) affirmed that those animals from Guadalupe, Panamá and Brasil are H. pallida with an ample distribution in all oceans. The taxonomic uncertainty and lack of knowledge of geographic origins require that it be classified as cryptogenic.…”

“…In São Sebastião, São Paulo, this species is found on artificial substrates used in scientific experiments (RMR, unpublished observation). MONNIOT (2002) described this species on wrecks on the coast near Djibouti, Africa. Styela partita (Stimpson, 1852) whose type location is Boston Harbor, in the …”

“…This species is very different from the other botryllids by having only four rows of stigmata and it is likely that other species that also have four rows of stigmata have been designated as this species. Colonies vary in both form and color (MONNIOT 2002). KOTT (1985) considered its distribution unusual, since it is very rare for a species of the western Pacific.…”

“…The circumtropical ascidian S. brakenhielmi is globally distributed in the Atlantic (Van Name, 1921;Monniot, 1983, Goodbody, 2003, Rocha et al 2005, Indian (Millar, 1954;Monniot & Monniot, 1997) and Pacific Oceans (Monniot & Monniot, 2001;Lambert 2003). It occurs in the Red Sea and the Suez Canal (Michaelsen, 1918) and according to Abdel Messeih (1994) it can be a Lessepsian migrant.…”
