Strategic Communication Intervention to Stimulate Interest in Research and Evidence-Based Practice: A 12-Year Follow-Up Study With Registered Nurses

Abstract: Background: Bridging the research-practice gap is a challenge for health care. Fostering awareness of and interest in research and development (R & D) can serve as a platform to help nurses and others bridge this gap. Strategic communication is an interdisciplinary field that has been used to achieve long-term interest in adopting and applying R & D in primary care.

“…The influence of critical thinking on the development of nursing care and on the acquisition of professional skills has been widely discussed in the literature. Critical thinking is regarded as an essential clinical skill because it promotes evidence-based professional practice (Chang, Chang, Kuo, Yang, & Chou, 2011;Edwards, Hawker, Carrier, & Rees, 2015;Morténius, Hildingh, & Fridlund, 2016). The concept of critical thinking has been widely explored in the field of university nursing education, but research on critical thinking skills among nurse managers is scarce (Zuriguel-Pérez et al, 2015).…”

“…Nurses play a critical role in the transfer of evidence into practice (Jansson & Forsberg, ) and use of theory by nurses for understanding why an intervention works and what is needed to support the uptake of the EBPs (Sales et al., ) may be one way to support use of EBPs (Morténius et al., ). The PARIHS Framework is one theory that has been used among nurses to understand factors influencing implementation of EBPs (Morténius et al., ).…”

“…Nurses can play a critical role in the advancement of EBPs across health care settings (Jansson & Forsberg, ). Supporting positive attitudes toward research and evaluation among nurses by fostering awareness and interest in research and evaluation offers opportunities to strengthen the connection between researchers, evaluators, and the clinical setting where EBPs are carried out and may be one way to facilitate receptivity toward evidence and use of EBPs (Morténius, Hildingh, & Fridlund, ). The use of theory for explaining why an intervention may work and how to support desired practice change is needed for uptake of EBPs (Sales, Smith, Curran, & Kochevar, ).…”
