Strategic orientations of nascent entrepreneurs: antecedents of prediction and risk orientation

Abstract: Entrepreneurial judgment is crucial for entrepreneurial success. Extant literature argues that prior experience influences entrepreneurial decisions and the identification of attractive decision spaces for entrepreneurial activity is impacted by subjective risk perception and response to this risk. We posit that entrepreneurs develop different preferences for risk and prediction and their decisions reflect these preferences. To understand the strategic orientations of nascent entrepreneurs, using a sample of 2… Show more

“…In contrast, when applying causation, they focus on a specific and fixed goal, think in a linear process, and rely on prediction to address competition. Previous effectuation literature suggests that individual level factors (Frese et al, 2019;Gabrielsson & Politis, 2011;Harms & Schiele, 2012;Markowska et al, 2018) and also environmental factors (e.g., Frese et al, 2019;Laskovaia et al, 2017;Read & Sarasvathy, 2005) influence choices for either effectuation or causation. However, this research neglected that these influence factors play together and that this interplay may vary across different locations.…”

“…The entrepreneurship is widely understood the concept, grounded in many scientific disciplines (Gumbau Albert 2017; Guerrero et al 2020). Narrow definition associates entrepreneurship with creation or/and running one's own business, while the broad understanding combines it with seeking and exploiting market opportunities, implementing innovations, or undertaking risk (i.e., Ferreira et al 2017;Markowska et al 2019). There are different levels of entrepreneurship analysis: the level of the individual, groupteam, organization, industry, society (Low and MacMillan 1998).…”
