Strategies to Promote Physical Activity During Pregnancy

Abstract: Physical activity during pregnancy has been associated with significant health benefits, however most women in the United States do not meet current guidelines. This systematic review evaluates evidence for interventions to improve physical activity during pregnancy in order to identify best practices and inform future research. Electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, SportDISCUS, Embase, ERIC, Psych Info and ISI Web of Science) were searched in July 2011 for peer-reviewed journal articles. Studies were included… Show more

“…A review of 9 interventions by Pearce et al indicated that only 3 found a statistically significant impact. 34 However, the authors found no unique strategies or techniques consistently associated with positive outcomes. The study limitations of these 9 trials included lack of statistical power, failure to test for baseline differences between the intervention and control groups, lack of a theoretical model, and use of a physical activity questionnaire not validated for pregnant women.…”

“…However, PA interventions aimed at pregnant women have not typically been based on relevant theoretical frameworks thereby limiting their effectiveness and importance (Gaston & Cramp, 2012). A recent systematic review of such interventions found that only four of the eleven interventions selected for inclusion were based on a theoretical model (Pearce, Evenson, Symons Downs & Steckler, 2013). Methodological weaknesses of the included studies, however, limited the validity and interpretation of findings and the authors emphasized the need for further research to effectively design and evaluate interventions to promote PA during pregnancy.…”

“…Los estudios consultados hacen referencia a la repercusión que tiene el ejercicio físico realizado en un medio terrestre, en relación con los resultados perinatales obtenidos (52). Pero son escasos los estudios encontrados en los que se puedan comparar esos resultados en relación con un programa de ejercicios realizado en el medio acuático.…”
