Streptomyces scabies sp. nov., nom. rev.

Abstract: Revival of the name Streptomyces scabies is proposed for the predominant species causing common scab of potato. Common scab strains from the northeastern United States, Atlantic Canada, and Hungary were differentiated by a phenotypic analysis of 42 criteria from six atypical pathogen strains, three saprophytic streptomycetes isolated from scab lesions, and reference strains of Streptomyces griseus and Streptomyces tendae. The 12 S . scabies strains formed a homogeneous group characterized by smooth grey spores… Show more

“…S. acidiscabies, which has previously been described in the northeastern USA, was found rarely; a single isolate from northern Maine and several isolates from a single location in New Brunswick were the only examples. This observation corresponds to reports that S. acidiscabies is not persistent in soil (Lambert and Loria 1989b;Lambert et al 2006). S. turgidiscabies was also very infrequent; S. acidiscabies and S. turgidiscabies may be ephemeral causes of CS in North America.…”

“…Potato scab is a disease of major economic importance in most potato-producing areas of the world (Lambert and Loria, 1989). The genes that encode the thaxtomin biosynthetic pathway appear to lie on a pathogenicity island that was transmitted to Streptomyces species, resulting in the emergence of new pathogenic species in agricultural production systems (Healy et al, 1999(Healy et al, , 2000Bukhalid et al, 2002).…”

“…Common scab of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a bacterial disease causing necrotic lesions and is frequently caused by Streptomyces scabies (22). S. scabies attacks actively growing tubers by producing thaxtomins, which are phytotoxins that inhibit the biosynthesis of cellulose (32), resulting in cell death.…”
