Stress reduction treatment of severe recurrent genital herpes virus

Abstract: Four individuals with high-frequency recurrences of genital herpes virus of at least 2 years' duration were treated with two behavioral stress-reduction treatments. Subjects were given 10 weekly sessions of frontalis EMG biofeedback (2 subjects) or progressive muscle relaxation treatment (2 subjects). Presession and postsession frontalis EMG measures were recorded for all subjects across treatment. Outcome was measured by daily and weekly symptom charting mailed in weekly over 6 months, or by telephone intervi… Show more

“…A prototypical example of this is the stress‐induced reactivation of herpes viruses . Chronic stress increases recurrence of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, whereas stress‐reduction strategies reduce reactivation . Similarly, psychosocial stress increases the incidence of varicella zoster virus; again, psychological intervention can enhance immunity to this virus …”

“…Human studies show that persistent, but not single or acute, stressors are associated with the frequency of recurrences, which is in agreement with findings that chronic, but not acute stress, correlates with the development of experimental viral infections in normal volunteers (46,93,94). Furthermore, psychosocial interventions have been shown to decrease the frequency of recurrences of herpes simplex infections (95).…”

“…15,16 Stress has also been linked to faster progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome 17 and to increased frequency of herpes simplex recurrences, 18 which decrease or resolve with stress-reduction therapies. 19 Such behavioral techniques are believed to have an immunomodulatory effect, as exemplified by relaxation training, which significantly enhances natural killer cell activity, 20 which in turn is associated with antitumor effects. 21 Psychosocial interventions have been reported to improve the evolution of inflammatory and skin diseases, [22][23][24] as well as to enhance the survival of patients with cancer.…”
