“…Stridulations that are of sexual significance have also been reported in a number of other coleopterans (Barr 1969;Claridge 1968;Mampe and Neunzig 1966;Michael and Rudinsky 1972;Wilkinson et al 1967). Apart from the courtship and mating stridulations, male O. rhinoceros were also found to produce stridulatory sound during aggressive encounters with other males.…”

“…Female I. avulsus, I. calligraphus, and I. grandicollis all have stridulatory organs on their heads (Wilkinson 1962). Female I. calligraphus stridulate at the entrance of male I. calligraphus nuptial chambers, and only once a female stridulates is she allowed entrance to the nuptial chamber (Wilkinson et al 1967). It is not known whether females of the three southern Ips produce species-speciÞc stridulatory signals.…”

“…However, cross attraction between lecontei and confums, rnontanus, and paraconfusus is relatively weak (D. L. Wood and Lanier, unpub. In addition to pheromones, stridulation may enforce breeding isolation of lecontei from hoppingi, confusus, and cribricollis because it serves as a courtship call which induces the male to allow the female to enter the nuptial chamber (Wilkinson et al 1967;Barr 1969). I. hoppingi has not been tested for response to sex pheromone, but it is expected to be very similar to those of the other confums sibling species.…”
