Morphometric values were assessed by the point-counting method. The volumetric density (Vv) of elastic fibres was correlated with fetal age. RESULTSAt 15 weeks the elastic fibres were sparse and homogeneously distributed. The size and thickness of elastic fibres increased with age, mainly in the third trimester of gestation. Elastic fibres formed a randomly orientated network in the trabeculae of the corpus spongiosum. The mean ( SEM ) Vv of elastic fibres in the spongy urethra was 5.2 (0.4)% in the fetus at 15 weeks and 14.8 (1.0)% at 36 weeks. In the urethra of the placematched young man the Vv was 19.0 (1.3)%.

SUMMARY:The goal of this investigation was to analyze and quantify changes of the reticular fibers in the prostatic urethra of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and compare with a control group. Prostatic urethra tissue samples were obtained from ten patients (age range 65 to 79 years, mean 66) with clinical symptoms of bladder outlet obstruction who had undergone open prostatectomy. The ten control group samples (urethral tissue samples from the transitional zone) were collected from prostates obtained during autopsy of accidental death adults of less than 25 years. The Vv of the reticular fibers was determined with stereologic methods from 25 random fields per sample using the point-count method with a M-42 grid test system. The quantitative data were analyzed using the KolmogorovSmirnov and Mann-Whitney U tests. The Vv (mean±SD) in the control and BPH groups respectively were: 23.4± 1.8 and 30.3 ± 1.2 (0.001). BPH cause significant increase of reticular fibers in prostatic urethra.

Article HistorySince diclofenac sodium extends the pregnancy and affects the fetus, our study aimed to stereologically investigate the components of the rat prostate with prenatally treated with diclofenac sodium. The rats were left overnight to mate. Pregnant animals were kept in a room tempreture with normal light and dark cycles and fed with normal diet. After injections to sham and treated groups for 15 days, 18 male offsprings were housed in three groups (6 placebo; 6 control; 6 treated). The 20 weeks-old animals were perfused and the prostates removed and embedded in paraffin. Tissue sections at 5µm thickness were taken at regular intervals and stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and Masson trichrome. Cavalieri principle was used for volume fractions analysis. Stereological examination revealed 55% acinar epitelium and 45% connective tissue in both control and placebo groups, as well as 60% acinar epitelium and 40% connective tissue in the treated group. Prenatally applied diclofenac sodium did not cause a statistically significant change in the prostate stroma-parenchymal ratio in 20-week old rats compared to the control animals (p>0.05).
