Strong Magnetic Field Effect on Surface Tension Associated with an Interfacial Magnetic Pressure

Abstract: The surface tension/interfacial energy is found to be influenced by a strong magnetic field. This phenomenon is associated with an increase in the anomalous morphology of the eutectic during solidification of a hypereutectic Al–Cu alloy in strong magnetic fields. On the basis of further in situ differential thermal analyses, this increase is related to additional undercooling provoked by the magnetic field. A semiquantitative model is developed to reveal the underlying mechanisms. It is proposed that the heter… Show more

“…Magnetic alignment of Al 2 Cu phase and competition between the easy magnetization axis and the preferred growth orientation was clearly observed . In recent years, strong magnetic field effects had been well investigated and a range of other effects had already been realized, including magnetic segregation of weakly magnetic materials, magnetic levitation, magnetic induced interfacial energy, magnetic induced/damped diffusion etc., which can be found in recent reviews …”

“…The contact angle between the liquid metal and crucible wall was reported to have increased due to magneticfield-induced surface tension. 11) In FeCuC system, magnetic-field-induced surface tension seems to cause migration to one area when the magnetic field is high. Figure 8 shows the effect of the strength of the magnetic field on (a) the area ratio and (b) Cu or Fe content in the samples shown in Fig.…”
