Strontium-85 Scanning of Suspected Bone Disease

Abstract: BRIrNm 19that might prove advantageous is the substitution of 5 % dextrose for 0.9 % saline in those patients who are initially hypernatraemic. The values for salicylate clearance given in Table II and Fig. 2 cannot be compared with those of other authors as they are based on total serum salicylate concentrations-as measured by the method of Trinder (1954)-and not on the unbound fraction only. They are presented, nevertheless, because they provide the clinician with a rough estimate of the rate of salicylate e… Show more

“…Strontiunih5, heing a y-emitting isotope is amenable to external counling and is, therefore, a potentially useful tracer for the assessmenl of new bone formation in uivo. It has in fact been used by a number of workers for the assessment of malignancies affecting the skeleton (Bauer & Wendeberg 1959, Gerson et al 1972, Kofman et al 1963, Parsons et al 1969, and for the study of fracture repair and inflammatory and reactive lesions in the skeleton (Bauer & Wendeberg 1959, Dymling & Wendeberg 1961. Radioisotopes of strontium have been widely used in studies of calcium metabolism on the assumption that strontium and calcium follow similar metabolic pathways (Bauer et al 1955, Samachson & Spencer 1961 1.…”

“…Also, marked ac- cumulation in the thyroid has been identified in rats according to the product sheet [12]. Conversely, since the strontium was taken up in new bone growth as well as calcium, Sr was used for many years in medicine to scan for bone lesions, or tumors [13].…”
