Structural and Magnetic Properties of Nd 2NiGe3. -The title compound is prepared by arc melting of stoichiometric amounts of the elements followed by annealing (1173 K, 10 d). Nd 2NiGe3 exhibits the AlB2 type structure (space group P6/mmm, powder XRD) and consists of two-dimensional NiGe3 hexagonal units sandwiching the Nd atoms. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility data follow the Curie--Weiss law at 20-300 K and yield an effective magnetic moment of 3.83 B/Nd and a paramagnetic Curie temperature of -2.1 K, the latter both indicating trivalent Nd and weak antiferromagnetic interactions. Low field magnetic susceptibility data show a weak antiferromagnetic ordering at 3 K. No long range antiferromagnetic ordering is observed in temperature dependent neutron diffraction measurements. The metallic nature of Nd 2NiGe3 is confirmed with a sudden drop in electrical resistivity at <3 K. -(SARKAR, S.; KALSI, D.; RAYAPROL, S.; PETER*, S. C.; J.
