Assuming that a suitable bistable molecule can actually be reliably synthesized and is chemically sufficiently stable, the major areas of concern are the errors in knowing or setting the switch state of the bistable molecule which arise from quantum fluctuations, and heat dissipation, as well as addressing (input/output contacts) limitations. Thermal degradation via bond breaking is also a concern.["* 331 For optical read/write systems the typical less than unit absorption (quantum yield), photochemical bond breaking, and switching errors are potentially additional limitations.t331 It must not be construed that stable molecular based materials of sufficient purity, be they organic, organometallic, polymers, or inorganic coordination complexes, are easily and reproducibly prepared. These are enormous research projects unto themselves. For the sake of argument, however, we will assume that these are surmountable challenges.
