Structural Design Elements in Biological Materials: Application to Bioinspiration

Abstract: biological materials often presents similar solutions, since the number of materials available in nature is fairly limited and therefore resourceful combinations of them have to be developed to address specifi c environmental constraints. We have identifi ed these common designs and named them "structural design elements."In the emerging fi eld of biological materials science, there is a great need for systematizing these observations and to describe the underlying mechanics principles in a unifi ed manner. “…By imitating the specific hierarchical structures and synthetic process of the corresponding organisms from nanoscale to microscale, scientists have synthesized various materials with special structures and novel properties,1, 2, 3, 4, 5 such as ultrastrong and stiff layered composites inspired by nacre,6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 high adhesion materials,13, 14 and other special biomimetic materials 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21. Taking advantage of the wisdom of natural organisms, smart materials with improved properties have been prepared and used in many fields.…”

“…Naleway et al [6] recently proposed eight structural design elements as a new paradigm for identifying common features in different organisms. Using a similar methodology, the organisms and structures in this manuscript can be divided into four classes based upon their biomechanical function:…”
