Nanosized barium zirconate (BaZrO 3 ) is prepared from its oxalate precursor, barium zirconyl oxalate (BZO). The decomposition of BZO precursor was studied by thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, fourier transform infra red spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. FTIR and XRD study reveals that BZO precursor calcined at 1173 K for 2 h gives nanosized perovskite type cubic BaZrO 3 powder. The transmission electron microscope study shows that BaZrO 3 particles prepared at 1173 K is nearly spherical in shape with diameter of 40-75 nm. Particle size study was carried out to investigate particle size distribution of BaZrO 3 particles. Band gap of BaZrO 3 was estimated from UV-visible spectroscopy data. Impedance measurement study shows that dielectric constant of BaZrO 3 prepared in this work is 31.69 at 10 kHz.
