Structure and intermolecular excitations of β-N2 at 400 MPa and 55 K

Abstract: Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been made on a single crystal of β-N2 at 55 K and a pressure of 400 MPa. The integrated intensities of 34 Bragg reflections were measured and analyzed in terms of symmetry-adapted harmonics. None of the coefficients of the higher-order harmonics could be determined and, within experimental error, the N2 molecule is randomly oriented. No well-defined librational modes were observed and even translational acoustic phonons are broad. The line shapes of tr… Show more

“…Three elastic constants, for P-N2 at 37 K, could be deduced from slopes of their dispersion curves and are shown in Table 1. Agreement is reasonable with the present 47.5 K results when extrapolated at 37 K. Powell et al (42) used this technique to determine three elastic constants e l l , c~~, and cj4 for P-N,, at 55 K and 400 MPa, and they appear to increase dramatically with pressure. ( 6 ) Phase transformation mechanism…”

“…This exceed considerably the Debye frequency 1.0×10 -12 sec -1 . No distinct libration modes were detected in β-N 2 in inelastic neutron scattering experiments, and even the observed translational acoustic phonons were broadened considerably due to the translation-orientation interaction, excluding the case of the smallest wave vectors [10].…”

“…If, in addition, the anisotropic orientational interactions are weak, the disorder closely approximates free molecular rotation. Examples are H 2 [10], CD 4 [11] and fl-N 2 [12].…”
