Structure from Motion Multisource Application for Landslide Characterization and Monitoring: The Champlas du Col Case Study, Sestriere, North-Western Italy

Abstract: Structure from Motion (SfM) is a powerful tool to provide 3D point clouds from a sequence of images taken from different remote sensing technologies. The use of this approach for processing images captured from both Remotely Piloted Aerial Vehicles (RPAS), historical aerial photograms, and smartphones, constitutes a valuable solution for the identification and characterization of active landslides. We applied SfM to process all the acquired and available images for the study of the Champlas du Col landslide, a… Show more

“…Another significant result of the SfM procedure is the orthophoto generation of the surveyed area. A highresolution image of the studied area is fundamental in many applications like, for example, the study of landslides (Peppa et al 2017;Fiorucci et al 2018a, b;Cignetti et al 2019), rivers (Tamminga et al 2015), or coastlines (Nikolakopoulos et al 2019).…”

“…Throughout complex and precise parameters, processing power, and software, based on projective geometry it converts the data extracted from the images into three-dimensional metric coordinates and colors. Given the present case study, difficult terrain conditions of the monitored slope associated with precise land surveying, this paper assesses the traditional monitoring of established techniques and instrumentation with the use of UAV that ensures accuracy and viability as an affordable and efficient method that accompanies traditional surveys for more comprehensive results [54][55][56][57][58][59].…”
