Structure of iodo(methylthiomethylphenyl)bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(II)

Abstract: Abstract. [PdI{(C6H5) Introduction. In the course of research into the cross-coupling reaction (Negishi, 1978) catalyzed by Pd(PPh3)4, we isolated an intermediate Pd(C6H4CH 2-SCHa)(PPh3)2I by reacting the organic halide [o-C6H4(CH2SCH3)I] with excess of Pd(PPh3) 4. We undertook this X-ray analysis to find out whether the coordination geometry about the Pd atom is squareplanar or square-based pyramidal with an intramolecularly coordinated S atom in apical position.

“…The molecular structure of 20 shows a trans configured palladium(II) complex bound only to the C20 atom of the bai′ ligand. As expected, the palladium atom is coordinated in a distorted square-planar geometry, and the bond lengths within the PdIP 2 C coordination unit are in agreement with values found for many similar compounds . It is interesting to note that 20 is not transformed into a CNN chelate complex even under prolonged heating.…”

“…1. The Pd-C bond length is not significantly different to that found previously in the related complex [Pd(I)(g 1 -C 6 H 4 CH 2 SMe)(PPh 3 ) 2 ], 13 while both the P-Pd bond lengths are longer in the case of the PCy 3 adduct.…”
