Gender Differences in Vocational Interests Across Three Balkan Countries

The main objective of the study was to examine gender differences in vocational interests across three neighboring Balkan countries – Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Serbia. Vocational interests were operationalized through the spherical model of vocational interests and Holland’s RIASEC circumplex model. The study reanalyzed data from previously published studies that collected vocational interest data from these countries. Participants of the study were 2536 young people, bachelor students in case of Bulgaria and North Macedonia and young people, with a high proportion of students, in the case of Serbia. They completed the Personal Globe Inventory. The results showed large gender differences along the People-Things dimension with Cohen’s d values ranging between 1.34 and 1.5 in the three country subsamples. Males tended to have higher preferences for jobs and activities that involved working with things than females, while females tended to have higher preferences for jobs and activities involving working with people than males. A substantial difference, but of smaller magnitude, was found in all three countries on the vocational interest dimension of Prestige, with females having higher scores than men. This difference came partly from higher preferences of women for high prestige jobs compared to men, but to a much greater extent from a much lower preference of women for low prestige jobs and activities compared to men. Comparisons were also made on vocational interest types and the largest differences found corresponded to those found in other world countries.

Psihologija rada" je grana primijenjene psihologije koja se bavi ljudskim radom. U vrijeme prevage industrijskog rada nazivala se i "industrijska psihologija".Danas se koristi i naziv "organizacijska psihologija", koji naglašava organizacijski kontekst ljudskog rada. Ova tri naziva su bliskoznačnice -pokrivaju slično područje psihologije kojemu je cilj objasniti ljudsko ponašanje pri radu te dobivene spoznaje primijeniti u cilju povećanja individualne dobrobiti i organizacijske uspješnosti.Povijesno, psihologija rada je bila prva grana primijenjene psihologije. Nastala je na prijelomu 19. i 20. stoljeća, kad su se ispunila dva nužna uvjeta. Prvo, tada je stvorena društvena potreba, jer su ubrzani razvoj industrijske proizvodnje i sve složenija tehnologija tražili više znanja o ponašanju i mogućnostima ljudi pri radu. Drugo, stasala je i sama psihologija, jer je razvoj eksperimentalne psihologije, diferencijalne psihologije i psihodijagnostike dosegao razinu koja je omogućila primjenu u praksi. Zato se upravo tijekom prvih godina 20. stoljeća u nekim zemljama zapadne Europe i u Sjevernoj Americi pojedini psiholozi počinju baviti problemima čovjeka pri radu: pojavljuju se prve analize poslova i zanimanja, započinju prva testiranja ljudskih sposobnosti u cilju profesionalnog usmjeravanja i odabira zaposlenika, a ispituju se i uvjeti rada o kojima ovisi umor i učinkovitost pri radu (vidi npr. Carpintero, 2017).Prvi odjeci tih dostignuća u nas zabilježeni su dvadesetak godina kasnije, ali je ozbiljniji razvoj psihologije rada u Hrvatskoj uslijedio tek u drugoj polovici prošlog stoljeća. ResumenIntroducción. En la teoría de los tipos de personalidad vocacional y ambientes laborales de J. Holland, el modelo hexagonal organiza los datos personales y ocupacionales, y sirve para definir el grado de consistencia en la configuración de la personalidad y ambientes de trabajo, así como el grado de congruencia entre una persona y su ambiente. El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar la validez estructural del modelo hexagonal de Holland y el jerárquico de Gati en una muestra de 636 estudiantes de bachillerato mexicanos, a través de las puntuaciones proporcionadas en la Búsqueda Autodirigida (SDS).Método. Para analizar el ajuste de estos modelos se aplicó la prueba de aleatorización de relaciones de orden hipotetizadas (RTOR) y se llevaron a cabo escalamientos multidimensionales (EMD) no métricos.Resultados. El tipo de personalidad social presentó la puntuación media más alta, a continuación el tipo emprendedor y después el artístico y el investigador. Las puntuaciones medias más bajas correspondieron a los tipos realista y convencional. En relación con la consistencia interna se obtuvieron coeficientes alfa de Cronbach de aceptables (.765) a buenos (.845). Los resultados de la prueba RTOR indicaron un ajuste significativo moderado (IC=.65) del modelo de Holland y un ajuste alto (IC=.778) del modelo de Gati a los datos observados. La solución del EMD en la muestra total (Stress=.01; RSQ=.99) mostró que los tipos se distribuyen según el orden RIASEC, pero la disposición espacial entre ellos forma un círculo deforme porque el tipo investigador se sitúa hacia el centro del círculo. El análisis del ajuste según el sexo y curso escolar no indicó diferencias significativas (p>.05), aunque los estudiantes de tercero mostraron un nivel de ajuste más alto que los de primero y segundo de bachillerato.Discusión y conclusiones. Los resultados aportan evidencia empírica de validez estructural de los modelos de Holland y Gati en la muestra de estudiantes. Estos modelos se pueden considerar una representación adecuada de los intereses vocacionales de estos estudiantes. Los resultados también aportan evidencia de validez de constructo de las puntuaciones del SDS, lo cual presenta implicaciones prácticas sobre la utilidad de este instrumento en la orientación vocacional y profesional.Palabras clave: Modelos RIASEC; Holland; intereses vocacionales; Búsqueda Autodirigida (SDS); estudiantes mexicanos.
