Struma ovarii – ultrasound features of a rare tumor mimicking ovarian cancer

Abstract: The ultrasound characteristics differ widely from typical mature ovarian teratoma. Features such as, solid roundish components with smooth contours, struma pearls, acoustic shadowing and occasionally signs of dermoid are clues and may help preoperatively to differentiate benign struma from malignant adnexal lesions.

“… 28 Another sonographic appearance of struma ovarii include acoustic shadowing and signs of dermoid cysts. 29 On MRI, the solid component shows low intensity on T2-weighted images and punctuate foci shows high intensity on T1-weighted images. On CT, calcifications along the cyst walls or septa may be the key feature.…”

“…The most common type of malignant form includes papillary thyroid carcinoma occur in about a third of cases with malignant metastasis in 5% of them (7). In epidemiological view, no racial predilection for struma ovarii was found, but this tumor appears commonly in the age range of 40 to 60 years and may be rarely seen before puberty (8). As the common clinical symptoms, abdominal pain, palpable abdominal mass, abnormal vaginal bleeding, ascites or pseudo-Meigs syndrome (ascites in the setting of hydrothorax) can be expressed by the patients (9).…”
