Sports play a functional role in human development. Regular sport participation has beneficial effects on physical, psychological and social wellbeing. It has positive effects on prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases, physical appearance, enhance self-concept and external prestige, lower rates of suicidal ideation, reduce use of fossil fuels, and substantially increase life expectancy. The advent and excessive use of technology, academic workload coupled with the incidence of COVID-19, students become content with engaging more in sedentary activities. This chapter examined the psychological factors predicting sport participation among Japanese and foreign students in Sendai, Japan. The common choice of recreational sports are sedentary activities with a high level of performance in terms of frequency, intensity, duration and long period of participation. Psychological factors of self-confidence, value, task familiarity, perceived success significantly predicts sport participation among university students. Therefore, there is need for increased awareness on benefit of sport participation within the university. Improved reconciliation between academic and physical education programs, and development of attractive recreational sports considering the psychological process that leads to participation. To allay concerns during pandemic, self-organized, non-contact and outdoor sports should be encouraged with adequate preventive measures in place.

“…Attendance rates are, however, important as without attending the activities, adolescents cannot access to the helpful messages the activities provided, and without frequent attendance adolescents cannot strengthen and reinforce the messages they hear and thus transform the knowledge into healthy behaviors (Hidecker, 2010;Wang et al, 2011;Webber and Mearman, 2009). Therefore, even though our results found that the attendance rates of the activities were not statistically associated with the positive effect of the relevant activities, we should not neglect the importance of guaranteeing the necessary and adequate attendance of the activities by participants.…”

Effect of interventions to improve adolescents’ nutrition knowledge in China

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to improve adolescents’ nutrition knowledge and to examine the effect of interventions component to improve adolescents’ nutrition knowledge. Design/methodology/approach – The study design was multi-factorial with repeated measures, at two points in time, of dependent samples from three schools, which were randomly selected from 15 middle schools in Miyun County, Beijing, and then randomly assigned to control school or intervention school. The instrument for baseline survey was a 14-item and for follow-up survey was a 26-item, self-administered, structured questionnaire, designed in Chinese. Findings – Students’ nutrition knowledge improved significantly in intervention schools after intervention compared with controls. The extent to which students felt that peer support activities were helpful and that what they learned in class about nutrition was helpful, was related to their resultant level of nutrition knowledge. Originality/value – To the authors’ knowledge there have been no previous studies which explore the effect of specific intervention components on levels of nutrition knowledge among adolescents.

RESUMEN: Este artículo desarrolla aspectos centrales de una aproximación minimalista a la Constitución y al cambio constitucional. El autor sugiere que la Constitución no busca ni pretende zanjar las controversias sociales fundamentales; no es la Constitución un proyecto acabado, un estado o etapa fi nal, sino una actividad; y su contenido estar basado en arreglos institucionales predominantemente orgánicos y procedimentales. Respecto del cambio cons-titucional se destaca la idea de renegociación constitucional; la importancia de minimizar la distinción entre política constitucional y política ordinaria; y recalca la particular solemnidad de la reforma constitucional. El autor utiliza esta aproximación minimalista para examinar algunos temas controversiales del debate constitucional actual en Chile. Palabras clave: Minimalismo, incrementalismo, reforma constitucional, proceso constitu-yente. ABSTRACT: This article develops key elements of a minimalist approach to the Constitution and to constitutional change. The author suggests that the constitution must not pretend to solve fundamental social controversies, nor is the constitution and end state, but an activity; and its content predominantly related to structural and procedural rules. Regarding constitutional change, it is highlighted the idea of constitutional renegotiation; the importance of minimizing the distinction between constitutional politics and ordinary politics; and emphasize the particular solemnity of constitutional amendment. The author applies this minimalist approach to examine some controversial aspects of the ongoing Chilean constitutional debate.
