Students With Learning Disabilities in Inquiry-Based Science Classrooms: A Cross-Case Analysis

Abstract: According to the National Research Council (NRC; 2006), "Most people in this country lack the basic understanding of science that they need to make informed decisions about the many scientific issues affecting their lives" (p. 1). This lack of science understanding may be why few students seek careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in the United States (Next Generation Science Standards [NGSS] Lead States, 2013). Because an understanding of the science curriculum greatly increases … Show more

“…There were seven studies employing single-subject research including multiple probe design, ABAB withdrawal design, AB design with regards to quantitative research methods (Aydeniz et al, 2012;Benedek-Wood, Mason, Wood, Hoffman & McGuire, 2014;Helman, Calhoon, & Kern, 2014;Kim & Linan-Thompson, 2013;Seifert & Espin, 2012;Thornton, McKissick, Spooner, Lo, & Anderson, 2015;Wills & Mason, 2014). There was one case study in the category of qualitative research methods (McGrath & Hughes, 2018). There was one study in the mixed research methods category.…”

“…Bu kapsamda tek tenekli araştırma modelleri arasından ortamlar arası çoklu yoklama, katılımcılar arası çoklu başlama, ABAB, AB, katılımcılar arası çoklu yoklama ve davranışlar arası çoklu yoklama modelleri kullanılmıştır (Aydeniz vd., 2012;Benedek-Wood, Mason, Wood, Hoffman, & McGuire, 2014;Helman, Calhoon, & Kern, 2014;Kim & Linan-Thompson, 2013;Seifert & Espin, 2012;Thornton, McKissick, Spooner, Lo, & Anderson, 2015;Wills & Mason, 2014). Nitel araştırma yöntemleri kategorisinde bir durum çalışması yer almaktadır (McGrath & Hughes, 2018). Karma araştırma yöntemleri kategorisinde de bir çalışma yer almaktadır.…”

“…"Implications for practice include the need for general education preservice and in-service professional development on differentiation for students with LD (learning disabilities) in science inclusion classrooms, especially when utilizing an inquiry-based curriculum." [27] (p. 140) Teachers should be better prepared, because they are challenged in an inclusive setting to facilitate social and academic participation. We agree with this demand, but it is necessary to investigate why teaching chemistry inclusively is so difficult for teachers.…”
