Studies about Electrochemical Plating with Zinc - nickel Alloys - the Influence of Deposition Potential on Stoichiometric Composition

Abstract: The electrochemical deposition of zinc and combinations with elements of the 8th group of the Periodic System (nickel, cobalt, iron) have good properties for anticorrosive protection, compared with pure zinc. For steel pieces, these films delay apparition and formation of white and red iron oxide. We used solutions with different concentrations of zinc chloride, nickel chloride and potassium chloride. To analyze the results we used the optic microscope and the X-ray diffraction.

“…The shift in the potential towards more positive values indicates that the NH 4 Cl additive inhibited the deposition of zinc and transformed it into a Zn-Ni alloy film [21]. This observation confirms that the NH 4 Cl additive is an inhibitor for Zn deposition [22]. The obtained results also indicate that the reduction of H + ions is very sensitive to the presence of ammonium chloride in the electrolysis bath.…”

“…Another fact easy to observe is the stabilization of the current during electrodeposition for the case of use of high working potentials (-1000 mV and -1100 mV respectively, figs. 7,8). This fact could be a logical consequence of masking of the secondar y reactions by the main electrochemical reactions, discharging of Ni 2+ ions, and stabilizing of electrodynamics equilibrium in all the mass of the electrolyte, especially on the electrodes surface.…”

“… and which may or may not contain hydroxyl group are adsorbed monovalently in intermediate reactions. Ni and Zn are the metallic deposits of nickel and zinc, respectively [30-32]. Same mechanism takes place in a multilayer coating of different SCCD's to form different layers with different compositions of Zn–Ni alloys.…”
