Studies on Fatty Acid Composition and Proximate Analyses of Anethum Sowa L. (Dill) Seed

Abstract: Anethum sowa L. (Dill) seeds were investigated to determine the fatty acid composition and proximate analyses. The seeds contain 9.36 % fatty oil. The saturated and unsaturated fatty acids contributed 6.22% and 93.78% respectively of the oil. The per cent composition of the extracted oil was identified by Gas Liquid Chromatography (GLC). Among the six fatty acids identified from this study oleic acid contributed the highest proportion (87.10%), where as, linolenic, palmitic, stearic, behenic and arachidic all … Show more

“…The optical rotations were measured as +11.54 o to +13.56 o at 26 o C. The refractive indices (RI) of the oils were found from 1.431 to 1.465 at 30 o C. The refractive indices indicated that the oil contained fairly large amount of long chain unsaturated fatty acids (Mabaleha et al, 2004;Ali et al, 1998;Saleh-E-In and Roy, 2007).…”

“…The fatty acid contents (qualitative and quantitative) were determined by GLC of methyl esters. The fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were prepared by complete esterification (checked by TLC) of oil using BF 3 -MeOH complex (Official Methods of Analysis, 1984;Metcalfe et al, 1966;Bannon et al, 1982;Saleh-E-In and Roy, 2007). Standard FAMEs (E. Merck) were used for the identification and quantification of the peaks.…”
