Studies on Hydrophilicity and Thermal Stability of Poly(isoalkyl lactate methacrylate)s

Abstract: Isopropyl and isobutyl lactates were reacted with methacrylic acid to obtain corresponding methacrylates through the azeotropic distillation method and their formation was confirmed by mass spectroscopy. Homopolymers were prepared by the solution polymerization method. Both monomers and homopolymers were characterized by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopic techniques. Hydrophilicity of polymers followed the Fickian process and moisture absorption was in the range of 10-24% (w/w). Glass transition temperature decreased… Show more

“…The azeotropic distillation method for synthesis of alkyl lactates, alkyl lactate acrylates, and alkyl lactate methacrylates, and the polycondensation method for the synthesis of PLA have been well documented. 33 -38 The inherent viscosity of PLA was calculated using Ubbelohde viscometer at 30 ± 0.1°C by dissolving the synthesized PLA in pre-dried and distilled THF at concentration of 0.5 g dL −1 , and the value obtained was 0.38 dL g −1 . Ghalia and Dahman have reported inherent viscosity of 0.37 dL g −1 for PLA synthesized by polycondensation which was shown to have a weight-average molecular weight ( true M ¯ w ) of about 28,400 Da and number-average molecular weight ( true M ¯ n ) of about 14,947 Da which is a relevant molecular weight for PLA.…”

“…[27,28] Seven poly(alkyl lactate acrylate)s such as poly(hexyl lactate acrylate) (P6), poly(heptyl lactate acrylate) (P7), poly(octyl lactate acrylate) (P8), poly(nonyl lactate acrylate) (P9), poly(decyl lactate acrylate) (P10), poly(undecyl lactate acrylate) (P11), and poly(dodecyl lactate acrylate) (P12) were synthesized following the method reported earlier by our group. [29][30][31][32][33] The lactic acid derivatives such as alkyl lactates and alkyl lactate acrylates were synthesized by following the azeotropic distillation method using Dean-Stark apparatus. The esterification reaction for the preparation of alkyl lactates was carried out using lactic acid and different higher alcohols such as hexanol, heptanol, octanol, nonanol, decanol, undecanol, and dodecanol using toluene as the azeotropic solvent to yield hexyl lactate, heptyl lactate, octyl lactate, nonyl lactate, decyl lactate, undecyl lactate, and dodecyl lactate, respectively.…”
