Studies on Cephalotrichum from soils in China — twelve new species and two new combinations

Abstract: A study of Cephalotrichum species diversity in soils of China resulted in twelve new species: Cephalotrichum acutisporum, C. cylindrosporum, C. ellipsoideum, C. inflatum, C. longicollum, C. macrosporum, C. oblongum, C. ovoideum, C. robustum, C. spirale, C. terricola, C. verrucipes. These species are illustrated and described in this paper. The type specimens (dried cultures) and living cultures are deposited in the Plant Pathology Herbarium of Shandong Agricultural University (HSAUP). Two Doratomyces species… Show more

“…(2014) proposed Cephalotrichum heliciforme as nomen novum for Trichurus spiralis Hasselbr. to avoid nomenclatural conflict with the recently described species Cephalotrichum spirale by Jiang et al. (2011) , which was characterised by the spiral pattern of roughness on the conidial surface.…”

“…Doratomyces ( Sturm 1829 ), typified by D. neesii , currently includes 22 species, five of them of uncertain application and shares morphological characteristics with Cephalotrichum . Since the application of Cephalotrichum was unclear to them, Morton & Smith (1963) considered the former as a possible synonym of Doratomyces whereas other authors, following the lectotypification of the genus by Hughes (1958) , considered Cephalotrichum as the correct name for this genus ( Carmichael et al., 1980 , Arx, 1981 , Abbott, 2000 , Jiang et al., 2011 , Seifert et al., 2011 , Beer et al., 2013 ). Cephalotrichum was sanctioned by Fries (1832) , and it is currently included in the proposed List of Protected Fungal Generic Names ( Kirk et al.…”

“…C. stemonitis was identified in coyote and rat dung, the indoor air of a honeybee (Apis mellifera) overwintering facility, the cones of white spruce, sandy soil, decayed wood of white spruce, soil of elm woods, and agricultural soil [24]. Recently, there are 14 new species of Cephalotrichum were explained based on the isolation from soils in China [25]. Although Cephalotrichum species are not considered as human pathogens and also not known to produce mycotoxins, but C. gorgonifer was collected from human clinical samples and can survive at human body temperatures [13].…”

“…Recently, 14 new Cephalotrichum species were described based on isolates from soil from China ( Jiang and Zhang, 2008 , Jiang et al., 2011 ). The status of those species, only known from their holotypes, could not be thoroughly evaluated by Sandoval-Denis et al.…”

“…Their list of uncertain or excluded species included 43 Cephalotrichum spp., and seven Doratomyces spp. These included 14 new Cephalotrichum species described recently from China, mostly based on morphology characters alone ( Jiang and Zhang, 2008 , Jiang et al., 2011 ). We were fortunate to obtain herbarium material of these latter species for study, allowing us to evaluate them in the broader context of the Cephalotrichum taxonomy established by Sandoval-Denis et al.…”
