Phylogeny and taxonomic revision of Microascaceae with emphasis on synnematous fungi

Abstract: The taxonomy of the synnematous genera Cephalotrichum, Doratomyces and Trichurus, and other related genera Gamsia, Wardomyces and Wardomycopsis, has been controversial and relies mainly on morphological criteria. These are microascaceous saprobic fungi mostly found in air and soil and with a worldwide distribution. In order to clarify their taxonomy and to delineate generic boundaries within the Microascaceae, we studied 57 isolates that include clinical, environmental and all the available ex-type strains of … Show more

“…The dominant species that colonized the deepest parts of the cavity were Acaulium albonigrescens and Scopulariopsis candida. Acaulium albonigrescens is a well-circumscribed species detected in soil, dung, and wood in Scandinavia, northern North America, and Japan [60,61]. We detected this species in Central Europe for the first time.…”

“…The Microascaceae family includes many ecologically important species, comprising saprobic fungi mostly found in air, soil, plant material, and urban environment. Some species of the Microascaceae are opportunistic pathogens of animals, including humans [60][61][62][63][64][65]. The members of Microascaceae isolated from the woodpecker nest cavity represented species with different ecological roles and interactions.…”

“…The dematiaceous hyphomycete genus Doratomyces comprises eight species, found on herbaceous stems, dead wood, dung, and soil, mainly in Europe and North America (Ellis, 1971(Ellis, , 1997Sandoval-Denis et al, 2016). Taxonomically, this genus is heterotypically synonymous with Cephalotrichum Link (Hughes, 1958), but it is generally cited as Doratomyces Corda in the literature from the field of conservation science .…”

“…Our Doratomyces (sic) isolate ) is considered to be the same species as that reported by Arai (1987Arai ( , 1990b and is presumably assignable to one of the dematiaceous (or dark) fungi surviving since the 1970s. To date, Cephalotrichum verrucisporum has been recorded from mountain soil (Jiang and Zhang, 2008), sand dune soil (Sandoval-Denis et al, 2016), and soil highly contaminated by PCBs (Mouhamadou et al, 2013). The TT isolate C. verrucisporum T7530-12-1 (JCM 28755) is presumed to have originated in soil.…”
