Studies on the Medical Treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis

Abstract: The aim of these studies was to investigate different regimens of thrombolytic therapy and oral anticoagulation, and to evaluate the effects of streptokinase (SK), heparin and warfarin in the treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Low‐dose SK, although controlled according to the fibrinogen levels, did not provide improved thrombolysis compared to conventional high‐dose SK, and more postthrombotic changes were registered after an average of 3 years. Furthermore, serious hemorrhagic side‐effects occurred, whi… Show more

“…Schulman et al, in a retrospective analysis of phlebographic study, reported that the risk of thrombus formation and propagation was significantly lower if the patients were actively mobilized during the first 48 hours of the procedure [23]. Our protocol applies early ambulation as soon as the first few hours after the procedure, while the patient is on the surgical floor.…”

“…is a major risk factor for the development and progression of thrombosis. Among 357 patients who were put to bed rest for five days while being anticoagulated with heparin, 26% developed phlebographically confirmed progression of their deep vein thrombosis, compared to only 1% of patients put to bed rest for one to two days (18). Immobilization should accordingly be limited to cases where it is absolutely necessary, e.g., certain traumatic injuries and postoperative situations, and severe systemic illnesses.…”
