“…Several investigators (23,37) have shown that when large amounts of estrogen are administered to lactating rats, a considerable amount of this hormone may be excreted in the milk. In view of the deleterious effects of estrogens on growth (38)(39)(40)(41)(42)(43)(44) this factor alone could account for the decreased growth rate and death of the young. It is also possible that large dosages of estrogen may have injurious effects on the lactating mothers as well, and this seems likely from the finding that there is a decrease in weight of lactating mother-rats following estrogen treatment (19).…”
