Since the (re) emergence of heterodox medicine across the Western world, there have been numerous interpretations of this phenomenon by the social sciences. Heterodox patients were said to be active consumers holding postmodern values, while heterodox physicians were described as heretics. Medical doctors taking up heterodox medicine were criticised for acting in their own financial interests. To examine these notions, we selected the most prominent heterodox mode of treatment in the German healthcare system: acupuncture. Twenty-six semi-structured interviews with medical acupuncturists and their patients were conducted. On the physicians' side, we analyse their styles of practice. To what extent is acupuncture incorporated into biomedical models? Were there any doctors who completely converted to Chinese ideas about health and illness? The patients' activities before and during treatment are addressed. What made them choose acupuncture? How thoroughly did-and do-they collect information on heterodox treatment? The patients' perception of their relationship with their physicians and the decision-making processes during the consultations are also examined. Finally, we argue that while some modes of heterodox medicine resemble parallel forms of general practice, acupuncture tends to become a medical speciality in which physicians tailor their practice to the individual patient's (perceived) demands. From the patients' perspectives, a passive rather than active form of consumerism emerges, involving ideas on medical services that closely correspond to classical modernity.
Fetal skeletal dysplasias are a heterogeneous group of rare genetic disorders, affecting approximately 2.4-4.5 of 10,000 births. We performed a retrospective review of the perinatal autopsies conducted between the years 2002-2011 at our center. The study population consisted of fetuses diagnosed with skeletal dysplasia with subsequent termination, stillbirth and live-born who died shortly after birth. Of the 2002 autopsies performed, 112 (5.6%) were diagnosed with skeletal dysplasia. These 112 cases encompassed 17 of 40 groups of Nosology 2010. The two most common Nosology groups were osteogenesis imperfecta [OI, 27/112 (24%)] and the fibroblast growth factor receptor type 3 (FGFR3) chondrodysplasias [27/112 (24%)]. The most common specific diagnoses were thanatophoric dysplasia (TD) type 1 [20 (17.9%)], and OI type 2 [20 (17.9%)]. The combined radiology, pathology, and genetic investigations and grouping the cases using Nosology 2010 resulted in a specific diagnosis in 96 of 112 cases.
The purpose of this study is to assess the ways in which homeopathic physicians deal with the conceptual tensions between homeopathy and biomedicine. The data-collection included twenty semi-structured interviews which were conducted with homeopathic physicians in Berlin. Three distinct patterns of homeopathic practice emerged from the data: a) segregating the patients into categories of homeopathic and biomedical patients; b) complementing a predominantly homeopathic practice with a few biomedical strategies for diagnostics; c) focusing on homeopathy and condemning biomedicine with the exception of emergency medicine and surgery. On the level of medical knowledge the physicians' perspectives on the efficacy of homeopathy and some of its controversial concepts (opposition to vaccinations, miasm, vital force) are examined. It also becomes evident that German homeopathic physicians do not sacrifice central aspects of homeopathic concepts in order to gain legitimacy.Finally, it is argued that complementary medicine and alternative medicine are both rather unfortunate terms for studying homeopathy in micro-sociological settings. Heterodox medicine is favoured.
