Studies on the peripheral blood cell parameters and morphology of the red paradise fish, Macropodus opercularis. Effect of food deprivation on erythropoiesis

Abstract: A description is presented of the peripheral blood cell values and blood cell morphology of both the normal and the starved red paradise fish. A n inhibitory influence of food deprivation upon erythropoiesis was demonstrated in this fish by the significant decrease in red blood cell and hematocrit values. A comparative study showed that the size and numbers of erythrocytes present in teleost blood reflect its habitat, activity, and degree of evolution.

“…The absence or scarcity of fish blood basophils has been widely noted (Drezwina, 1911;Werzberg, 1911;Jordan, 1938;Saunders, 1966;Weinberg et al, 1972), they being described as cells containing a blue-stained nucleus and large magenta-stained granules (Jordan, 1926). We have not found basophils in S. aurata blood smears.…”

“…dulus majalis, and Cyprinodon uariegatus (Gardner and Yevich, 1969) or described as the single granulocyte type present in other fish species (Weinberg et al, 1972;Mattisson and Fange, 1977;Barber and Westermann, 1978;Cannon et al, 1980;Groman, 1982;Kusuda and Ikeda, 1987). The nucleus of S. aurata neutrophils could be described as polymorphic but, according to Ellis (1977) the term "polymorphonuclear leukocyte," used to designate their mammalian counterpart, would be inappropriate.…”

“…1972; Sherburne 1974; Murray 1984), although they have been observed in others (Romestand and Trilles 1984; Zuasti and Ferrer 1988). In the HK of the O. niloticus we identified some developing cells of the basophilic series (myelocyte and metamyelocyte) characterised by prominent rER and large, rounded cytoplasmic granules with fibrillary content as mentioned in Sparus aurata (Zuasti and Ferrer 1988).…”

“…Changes in body water content and/or erythropoietic depression during starvation may induce changes in haematological parameters (Weinberg et al . ; McCue ). The mean value for the different blood parameters of sobaity sea bream juveniles exposed to different cyclic feeding regimes is shown in Table .…”
