Studies on the Physical and Chemical Behavior of Oil and Dispersant Mixtures

Abstract: Laboratory studies on dispersant effectiveness were conducted to assess the effects of several variables and to determine the action mechanisms of dispersants. The variables examined were temperature, salinity, and dispersant quantity. Dispersant effectiveness was measured as a function of the five oil bulk components: asphaltenes, aromatics, polar compounds, saturate compounds, and waxes. The effect of water temperature variation is logarithmically correlated with dispersant effectiveness. With… Show more

“…We suggest the combined effects of increased temperature and exposure to C-9500A may decrease the ability of the proposed heat shock protein pathway to respond to these combined stressors (Smith et al, 2012;Wheelock et al, 2002), leading to dose-dependent mortalities increasing with increasing temperatures. Alternatively, an increase in temperature may increase lipid dispersing efficiency on C-9500A as seen in C-9527 (Fingas et al, 1991). This would increase the ability of C-9500A to disrupt lipidbased structures in rotifers (e.g.…”

“…The effect of water temperature variation is logarithmically correlated with dispersant effectiveness [59]. Dispersant/oil ratios greater than approximately 1:40 result in a low dispersant effectiveness.…”

“…Byford [14] showed that dispersants efficiency changes depending on salinity of water. Fingas et al [15] carried out swirling flask test on Alberta Sweet Mixed Blend, Norman Wells, Adgo crude oils with Corexit 9527, Enersperse 700 and Citrikleen dispersants in water with salinity between 0 and 100 ppt. All tests were completed with pre-mixed dispersant and oil.…”
