PTSD is a disorder caused by trauma, but trauma does not explain fully why some individuals develop PTSD and others do not. Difficulties in social cognition (the ability to recognize the emotions, actions and intentions in oneself and others) have been hypothesized as a risk factor for PTSD. However, trauma exposure and PTSD have also been suggested to impair social cognition. This article explores the evidence for the relationship between social cognition and PTSD and also addresses areas for further research.
